The story behind 2023

The Beginning of Aurora Travel's World Travel Awards Journey

In 2023, Aurora Travel reached an important milestone in its international recognition when it received its first nomination at the World Travel Awards™, competing for the title of Hungary's Leading Travel Agency 2023.

The nomination marked the beginning of what would become a continuing World Travel Awards journey for Aurora Travel. More importantly, it represented international recognition for a travel company that had deliberately chosen a different path: rather than trying to cover every destination in the world, Aurora built its expertise around an exceptionally deep understanding of one of the world's most distinctive destinations — the Maldives.

About the World Travel Awards™

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards™ was created to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across the global travel, tourism and hospitality industries. Over more than three decades, its programme has expanded across destinations, airlines, hotels, resorts, cruise companies, tour operators, travel agencies and other major sectors of international tourism.

The World Travel Awards programme operates on several levels, including country, regional and world awards. Country categories recognise leading travel and tourism organisations within individual markets, while regional winners can progress within the wider international awards programme.

The nomination process is structured around previous high-performing organisations together with vetted and approved entries and World Travel Awards commendations. Once the nominees have been selected, voting is open to both travel professionals and consumers. Verified travel-industry votes carry additional weighting within the voting system.

Within this international programme, Hungary's Leading Travel Agency recognises travel companies operating in the Hungarian market. In 2023, Aurora Travel was officially listed among the nominees in this category for the first time.

Aurora Travel's First Nomination

For Aurora Travel, the 2023 nomination carried particular significance because it brought our highly specialised approach to travel into a national award category covering the broader travel industry.

Aurora was founded in Hungary in 1997, but over the years our identity has become increasingly connected with the Maldives. Instead of building our expertise around an ever-growing list of destinations, we chose to go deeper.

Our philosophy is based on a simple belief: there is no single "best" resort in the Maldives. There is only the resort that is right for a particular traveller.

Every island is different. House reefs, lagoons, beaches, villa styles, restaurants, atmosphere, privacy, family facilities, marine life, transfer options and countless other details can completely change the experience of a Maldives holiday. Understanding these differences requires considerably more than comparing hotel descriptions.

It requires first-hand destination knowledge.

This approach has gradually shaped Aurora Travel into a dedicated Maldives specialist, combining personalised travel planning with extensive knowledge of individual islands and resorts.

Rather than recommending a property simply because it belongs to a particular luxury category or hotel brand, our goal has always been to understand the traveller first: how they travel, what they value, what kind of island atmosphere they prefer and what they expect from their Maldives experience.

For one guest, the perfect island may mean an extraordinary house reef accessible directly from the beach. For another, it may be a spectacular lagoon, an overwater villa, outstanding gastronomy, privacy, family facilities or an unforgettable honeymoon setting.

This philosophy of personalised Maldives travel became one of the foundations of Aurora's development.

A Milestone, Not a Finish Line

Aurora Travel did not win Hungary's Leading Travel Agency in 2023. The significance of this recognition lies elsewhere: 2023 was the year Aurora first entered the World Travel Awards story.

Being named among the official nominees placed Aurora Travel alongside other established Hungarian travel companies and provided an important external recognition of the direction the company had been building for years.

Rather than treating the nomination as a destination, Aurora regarded it as another step in a much longer journey.

Our focus remained unchanged: continuing to deepen our Maldives expertise, strengthening relationships with resorts and travel partners, improving the way we match travellers with the right islands, and developing increasingly personalised ways to plan Maldives holidays.

The years that followed would bring further World Travel Awards nominations and new international recognition. But every journey has a starting point.

For Aurora Travel, that starting point was 2023.

What it means to our guests

Aurora Travel’s first World Travel Awards™ nomination marked an important milestone for us, but for our guests it represented something more: independent recognition that our highly personalised, expertise-led approach to travel was gaining attention on an international stage. As a Maldives specialist, our philosophy has never been simply to sell hotels or holiday packages. We take the time to understand each traveller’s individual expectations and use our destination knowledge and first-hand experience to help identify the island and resort that truly suits them. The 2023 World Travel Awards™ nomination placed this approach within a wider professional context. Within the World Travel Awards voting system, both travel professionals and consumers can vote, with verified travel-industry votes carrying additional weight. For our guests, this recognition provides another layer of confidence: behind every Aurora journey is personal attention, genuine Maldives expertise and a travel company that, in 2023, was named for the first time among the official nominees for World Travel Awards™ – Hungary’s Leading Travel Agency.
