Location

North of Male is Lhaviyani Atoll, also known as Faadhippolhu Atoll, the islands are about 30-40 minutes away by seaplane from Male. There are a total of 54 islands in the Atoll. Although tourism is a major source of income, their main income still comes from fishing. The center of Lhaviyani Atoll is Naifaru, with almost 5,000 inhabitants.

Explore diving in Lhaviyani Atoll

As with most of the Maldives – the variety of marine life in the Lhaviyani Atoll will keep you busy. On the outer reefs you can expect to see many different types of trigger fish, surgeon fish, fusilier and butterfly fish during your dive. Having a closer look to the reef will expose different species of moray eels hiding in little holes and if you are lucky you might even spot the most colourful peacock mantis shrimp on the hunt.

More experienced divers can head to Madivaru Kandu. As you drift from one corner of the channel to the other, look out for eagle rays passing above you like jets performing in an aerial display. Whitetip reef sharks may follow the channel’s edge, and schools of snappers and brightly colored triggerfish can be seen at the channel’s corners.

Snorkeling

Ranging from house reefs and underwater islands to outreefs of the atoll, there are numerous places worth exploring just a stone’s throw away from Hurawalhi. Coral reefs are not reserved only for divers – just by donning your mask, snorkel and a pair of fins a whole new world opens before one’s eyes – one that you shouldn’t leave unnoticed during your stay at Hurawalhi. Beneath the soothing swaying of palm trees and steps away from some of the world’s most biodiverse natural terrain, there could hardly be a better place to stimulate your curiosity and wonder of the ocean.

The bustling underwater metropolis that awaits below the water surface around Hurawalhi is certainly well worth a visit. Lhaviyani Atoll is made up of a number of narrow and shallow channels that funnel the nutrient-rich water directly into Hurawalhi’s proximity, resulting in an incredible amount and variety of marine life. The island sits between two such channels and as a result is home to an abundance of sea life.

Currents, abundant sun and clear water provide aquarium-like conditions for over 2,000 species of fish and more than 200 species of coral. Crustacea and invertebrates are aplenty in the Maldives too.
