Silver Recognition for Travel Agent Innovation
In 2025, Aurora Travel received Silver at the Travel Weekly Magellan Awards in the Individual Travel Advisor – Overall-Travel Agent Innovation category for its “Best in Maldives” entry.
The recognition represents a different side of Aurora Travel's Maldives expertise.
For years, our work has been built around first-hand destination knowledge and highly personalised resort recommendations. But as our knowledge of the Maldives continued to grow, so did the amount of information behind every recommendation.
Hundreds of resorts. Different islands, atolls, beaches, lagoons, house reefs, villa types, restaurants, transfer methods, activities and atmospheres.
This led to a simple question:
How could we transform years of specialist Maldives knowledge into a better way for travellers to discover and understand the destination?
Our answer was to combine the experience of a specialist travel advisor with technology designed specifically around the Maldives.
About the Travel Weekly Magellan Awards
The Travel Weekly Magellan Awards recognise outstanding work across the travel industry, including travel advisors and agencies, hospitality, destinations, airlines, cruise lines, tour operators and travel services.
Within the Travel Advisors/Agencies sector, the programme includes categories covering service, technology, marketing, training and travel agent innovation. In 2025, Aurora Travel's “Best in Maldives” entry received Silver in Individual Travel Advisor – Overall-Travel Agent Innovation.
The distinction is particularly relevant to Aurora because innovation has become an important part of how we translate specialist knowledge into a more useful experience for travellers.
For us, innovation is not about replacing personal service with technology.
It is about using technology to make specialist knowledge more accessible.
Rethinking How Travellers Choose a Maldives Resort
Choosing a resort in the Maldives is fundamentally different from choosing a conventional city hotel.
A traveller is not simply choosing where to sleep. In most cases, they are choosing the island on which they will spend almost their entire holiday.
The house reef, lagoon, beach, vegetation, island size, restaurants, villa locations, marine life, transfer experience and overall atmosphere all become part of that decision.
Yet many traditional hotel search systems are built around relatively simple filters: destination, dates, price, star rating, board basis and room category.
We wanted to go much deeper.
This philosophy became part of the development of AuroraMaldives.com — a Maldives-focused platform designed to organise resort knowledge around the characteristics that actually influence the experience.
Instead of looking only at conventional hotel classifications, travellers can explore the Maldives through much more specific criteria: from exceptional house reefs, manta and whale shark opportunities, sandbanks and seaplane transfers to family facilities, adults-only environments, gastronomy, premium all-inclusive concepts, privacy, nightlife and different styles of island experience.
The purpose is simple:
to make the differences between Maldives resorts easier to understand.
From Resort Search to Resort Matching
The real innovation, however, is not simply creating more filters.
It is changing the question.
Traditional travel search begins with:
“Which hotels are available?”
Our approach begins with:
“What kind of Maldives experience are you looking for?”
This distinction matters because there is no single resort that is best for everyone.
A honeymoon couple looking for privacy and an intimate barefoot island may need a completely different recommendation from a family travelling with teenagers. A passionate snorkeller may prioritise immediate access to an exceptional house reef, while another guest may prefer a vast turquoise lagoon, outstanding gastronomy or an extensive premium all-inclusive concept.
Technology can help organise these differences.
Specialist experience helps interpret them.
Technology Built Around First-Hand Knowledge
Behind Aurora's digital approach is the same foundation that supports our personal travel planning: first-hand Maldives experience.
Our team has personally visited more than 150 Maldives resorts and islands and continues to inspect more than 30 every year.
This allows us to look beyond standard hotel information and consider details that can be difficult to understand without actually experiencing an island — how accessible the reef is, how different sections of the beach feel, whether the resort feels intimate or lively, how villa locations differ, what the dining experience is really like, and which type of traveller is most likely to enjoy the property.
Our long-term objective is to structure this knowledge so that it becomes useful not only during a conversation with an Aurora specialist, but throughout the entire resort discovery process.
In this model, technology and human expertise are not competitors.
They strengthen each other.
Innovation with a Purpose
Aurora Travel's approach to innovation is ultimately about improving one decision: which Maldives island is right for you?
More technology does not necessarily create a better travel experience. More information does not necessarily make choosing easier either.
The value comes from organising the right information in a way that helps travellers understand meaningful differences between resorts.
The 2025 Silver Magellan Award for Travel Agent Innovation provides external recognition for this direction and marks an important stage in Aurora's evolution from a traditional specialist travel agency into a Maldives-focused travel platform built around expertise, personalisation and technology.
Our underlying philosophy remains unchanged:
There is no “best resort” in the Maldives. There is only the resort that is right for you.

What it means to our guests For our guests, innovation should have one practical result: making it easier to find the right Maldives resort. The Maldives offers an extraordinary choice of islands, but those choices can quickly become overwhelming. Resorts that appear similar in photographs or price can provide very different experiences once you arrive. Aurora's approach combines technology, structured resort information and first-hand destination knowledge to make those differences easier to understand. Instead of relying only on conventional hotel categories, travellers can consider the characteristics that actually shape a Maldives holiday — from house reefs, lagoons and island size to gastronomy, villa styles, family facilities, marine life and atmosphere. Technology helps organise the possibilities. Our specialists provide the experience and context behind them. And personal consultation allows us to understand what matters most to each guest. The result is not simply more choice. It is a more informed and personalised way to choose. The 2025 Silver Magellan recognition for Travel Agent Innovation provides independent industry recognition of the direction Aurora is taking: combining Maldives expertise with new ways to discover, compare and understand resorts.
